Making Room

THE HELMS

When TVC’s call went out for people to host students in their homes, Brian and Shelby Helm emailed back right away. With two kids of their own in the Student Ministry, Brian and Shelby had been wanting to serve students, but weren't sure how to get involved. This was the perfect fit! Well, almost perfect.

Once a month, the high schoolers break into groups and go to host homes for pizza, games, group teaching time, and gender-specific small groups. The only problem for the Helms was they didn’t have a space large enough to host all three of their local groups. Staring at their entertainment room and wishing it were bigger, they looked at each other and said, “Let’s just bust down the wall!”

The room they used for homeschooling merged with the entertainment room to make one big room for discipleship. “Now, it's not just me teaching my kids in here,” said Shelby, “but it’s others coming in and teaching as well.”

“When we drop off our kids at Student Night, it feels like there are a million kids,” she continued. “But getting to have the groups come to our house makes it feel smaller and more real. These are precious souls, not just a multitude of kiddos running around crazy. It puts it all into perspective.”

When faced with a literal wall, the Helms called a contractor and had it removed.

Now a new generation of believers has a place to grow in their faith and belong. Who knows what future impact the Helm’s simple yet bold decision will have on the kingdom of God?
